Watercolor Sloth

Description:
This painting was for an old friend for Christmas. Her favorite animal is a sloth, so I painted one. At the time I’d started working with watercolor so I wanted to use that medium for her gift. I had to spend extra time on this due to being inexperienced with the medium. I used primarily watercolor and then added more detail with colored pencils.
Going from grayscale to color made it difficult to maintain the upward trajectory I had with contrast. There are large areas of this painting that look flat. I think it is obvious that this is one of my first realistic watercolor paintings.
